If you’re coming into Path of Exile 2 after the first game, you might be confused when you see a trader option to disenchant your items. In fact, it’s actually much more familiar than you might initially think. Disenchanting items is one of the main ways to make currency in PoE2 in a similar way to how common trading worked in the original. The main difference being that the option to buy and sell items for gold is a new thing, so the old ‘trading in’ has become ‘disenchanting’. We’ll explain all the ins and outs of how to disenchant items in Path of Exile 2.

How does disenchanting work in PoE2 and what can be disenchanted?

In Path of Exile 2, disenchanting items is the main way to obtain the currency used in crafting. You can disenchant items in the Act hub, often at the “magic” vendor. For example, in Act 1, you can disenchant items by speaking with Una and selecting the corresponding option. There are a few rules when it comes to disenchanting:

  • You can’t disenchant normal (grey) items.
  • You can disenchant magic (blue) items to get Transmutation Shards. Combining 10 of them makes one Orb of Transmutation.
  • You can disenchant rare (yellow) items to get Regal Shards. Combining 10 of them makes one Regal Orb.
  • You can disenchant Legendary (orange) items to get Chance Shards. Combining 10 of them makes one Orb of Chance.
✓ Pro tip

Unlike PoE1, in the sequel it doesn’t matter if the item you’re disenchanting is identified or not – you will get the same currency either way.

This makes disenchanting an essential part of the crafting process. It will be worthwhile to pick up blue and yellow gear so you can get the mats necessary for the first few steps when crafting. Combined with currency received from salvaging gear, the currency from disenchanting will form the necessary base of many of your early crafting projects, and often translate well into the late game.
