The starter motorbike is great and all, but you’ll eventually want to graduate to a more comfortable and faster car to explore the Dayton Wetlands and beyond. While getting the motorbike is guided by a robust tutorial, getting a car isn’t, leaving you to figure it out for yourself.

As with most things in Once Human, the answer lies in Memetics and crafting. We’ll walk you through how to get a car. If you want details on all the modes of transportation, check out the full vehicle list. For more general hints, check out our top tips and tricks, amassed from more than time than we’d care to admit playing the supernatural survival crafter.

How to unlock the car in Once Human

To unlock the car, press the O key to bring up the Memetics Cradle, then select Memetics on the left of the screen. Select the Building tab at the top, then unlock the Garage, Modification I, and, most importantly, the Four-Wheeler formula set. The latter will cost you 5 Meme Point ciphers and 700 Energy Link. It grants access to the All-Terrain Vehicle and the Retro Coupe along with car modification components.

Next, build a Garage if you don’t have one yet, then approach the Garage and tap F to bring up the management screen. Tap X to go to the vehicle list then select the car you want to craft. We’ll go for the Retro Coupe. On the left, you’ll see four boxes with plus signs under Basic Parts – frame, tire, engine, and oil/fuel tank.

To craft a car, you’ll need to make each of these components. The better the part (and also more resource hungry), the better the durability, speed, handling, and fuel tank capacity, as you can see in the top left of the crafting screen. We’ll go for the most basic parts for the sake of this example, which means we’ll need the following:

  • Refined Frame – x20 Metal Scraps, x30 Steel Ingot, and x60 Rubber
  • Standard Tire – x40 Fireproof Plastic, x50 Adhesive, and x5 Steel Ingot
  • Standard Engine – x20 Refined Part, x50 Metal Scraps, x10 Steel Ingot, and x12 Electronic Part
  • Rusty Oil Tank – x20 Rubber and x8 Fireproof Plastic

After crafting each part, tap F to craft the whole Retro Coupe. Press X to bring up the vehicle list again, click on the car and tap F to activate it, which basically means you’ll summon the car whenever you press G instead of the bike. Remember to get in via the driver’s seat otherwise the car won’t move. Other than that, you’re all set to enjoy your fresh wheels.
