The full Grand Larceny decklist is now revealed. The deck Commander – “Gonti, Canny Acquisitor” is a Sultai Theft card, with plenty of compatibility with a range of ramp directions.

An theme prevalent in the Outlaws of Thunder Junction set, and Murders at Karlov Manor in a very different way, is crime. It makes sense that the Grand Larceny decklist plays up to this archetype of misdemeanour too. This looks to be a Theft deck centred around different abilities to steal mana, spells, while also exiling cards from the opponent’s library before they even get the chance to see them.

Already, comparisons between Gonti, Canny Acquisitor and Evelyn, the Covetous have begun. The latter is a first-choice for many Theft decks in MTG. However, the Evelyn Theft decks tend to focus on Vampires, which Gonti is going to undermine severely.

Sultai Commanders – as per MTG Colour combinations – are Blue, Black, and Green leaders, letting you ramp into two of the most powerful Mana types in Magic. A likely strategy with Gonti is going to focus on Exile too.

✓ Amaar’s Advice

Look past the bells and whistles.

While Gonti certainly looks a likely Commander to spice up Theft decks, criticism is still due. The fact it’s going to only reduce mana costs by a single point is a let down considering the five Mana needed to summon.

The card art developed so far for Outlaws of Thunder Junction has been phenomenal, and Wizards of the Coast haven’t missed the mark here at all.

There is due criticism on the Grand Larceny deck, which unfortunately features few other cards of value. While the reception to Fallout and Murders at Karlov Manor precons went well, it’s hard to see how audiences are going to appreciate this one, despite the versatile archetype it offers.

Upgrades for the Grand Larceny deck

Cards such as Blue Sun’s Twilight play into the Theft archetype with the ability to gain control of target creatures, and the fact that the Grand Larceny deck can ramp into Blue mana easily makes it likely that we’ll see this card often used to upgrade the deck.

Similarly, Agent of Treachery, another Blue card often seen in Theft decks seems a likely choice for upgrades to Grand Larceny, alongside Beguiler of Wills.

We’ve also had a look at the Most Wanted decklist, another one of the Outlaws of Thunder Junction precons, though we’ve not had the greatest reception to it.

Don’t get rid of Smirking Spelljacker

One of the cards we’re particularly impressed with so far is the Smirking Spelljacker which can counter nearly anything.

What is Sultai in Magic: The Gathering?

Sultai is a color combination archetype in MTG that fuses Black, Blue, and Green mana types. In the case of the Grand Larceny deck, its Commander is a Sultai, so you’re going to be able ramp into any three of the mana types with Gonti.

Is Grand Larceny a Theft deck in MTG?

You can expect the Grand Larceny precon to be primarily used as a Theft deck. Its Commander, Gonti, wields the ability to steal opponent’s cards and cast them for one less mana, making it a great card to turn the tables on your opponent – literally.
