One of the next Magic sets to release is Bloomburrow, and here’s the all of the spoilers, leaks and cards we’ve seen so far.

Magic: The Gathering’s first set after the conclusion of the Omenpath arch is Bloomburrow. It is a plane where there are only animals, with no humans found on the plane (and those that do travel there are turned into animals). The set is highly anticipated and features a ton of new characters for the setting. This Bloomburrow set guide will go over everything you need to know about it, from the themes to the archetypes and story of the set. It kicks off the second part of a three-year storyline that started with the Omenpath arc, though this is the start of the Dragonstorm arch.

MTG Bloomburrow themes

The main theme of Bloomburrow is it is an all-animal plane. Humans do not exist, and visitors from other planes are transformed into animals rather than staying human. Each colour pairing on Bloomburrow is based on a specific creature type, such as Boros (white/red) being the colour of Mice and Izzet (blue/red) being the colour of Otters.

While there are very few off-plane characters in the main set, a bonus sheet is a part of Bloomburrow called Courageous Critters which a reprint set with art depicting what planeswalkers and creatures would look like if they were to visit Bloomburrow. Jace Beleren is confirmed to be in the sheet as a fox, with many more other characters to be included in the Courageous Critters from across many planes.

Bloomburrow has two main factions, those being the adventurers and citizens of Bloomburrow, and the Calamity Beasts along with the Great-Night Owl who are the antagonists of the set.

Bloomburrow Commander Themes:

As with all Standard releases, Commander decks will be released alongside the main set release. Bloomburrow has four different Commander decks, all led by a different animal. Animated Army (Red/Green) is led by a Raccoon and is about animating artifacts into creatures to swing in for damage. Family Matters (Blue/Red/White), led by a Bird Bard is built around flooding the battlefield with creatures to overpower your opponents. Peace Offering (Green/White/Blue) is led by a Bunny and is a group hug deck that also spreads +1/+1 counters. Lastly, Squirrel Away (Black/Green) as the name implies is led by a Squirrel and is about making tokens.

Analysis of the Bloomburrow set

Each main archetype of Bloomburrow is based around a creature type that shine at a specific gameplay style. As seen in the Starter Kit release, Izzet is about spellslinging, with multiple cards in the colour having prowess. Selesnya is about +1/+1 counters, and Boros is about Equipment.

Due to the lack of humans, specific creature types get a big boost, especially since each colour has a focus on certain animals. As seen in the key arts of Bloomburrow, Mice, Bats, Rabbits, Bears, Frogs, Otters, and Lizards are all present.

Bloomburrow has a large focus on creature types, so many of the Limited formats will be built around them. All the creature types in Bloomburrow are already in Magic, so there will be upgrades for those decks.

The Courageous Critters bonus sheet also makes a big impact on the Limited formats. Normally, there is only one planeswalker per set, but planeswalkers will be included in the bonus sheet and usable in Draft and Sealed formats due to their inclusion in Play Boosters. Other creatures will be included in the bonus sheet, including legendary ones to give special art treatments to various popular characters in Magic.

There are multiple basic land arts in Bloomburrow as a full-art printing. Each version of the basic land depicts the same character and background, but how it looks like in each of the four seasons. Seasons are important in Bloomburrow, so the basic art reflects how vastly different the plane looks depending on what season it is.

The calamity beasts will get borderless Field Note versions of themselves along with regular printings. These showcase the calamity beasts with various segments highlighted and different areas of them marked. Collector Boosters will have exclusive raised foil anime variants for some of the popular cards including Mabel. A Woodland showcase is also a part of the booster fun, giving the art a storybook twist. Artist Mitsuhiro Arita (best known for their work on the Pokemon TCG including the art for the original Charizard card) did the work for Mabel’s Woodland variant, with other artists doing their own versions.

Bloomburrow will also mark the release of 2024’s Starter Kit. Starter Kits are lower-power two-colour decks meant to introduce players to the game of Magic. These are meant to be a teaching tool for those interested in Magic rather than a product enfranchised players purchase.

The Bloomburrow story so far

Bloomburrow kicks off the Dragonstorm arch, the middle arch of a three-year-long story arch codenamed Metronome that started in Wilds Of Eldraine. The Dragonstorm arc takes place over Bloomburrow, Duskmourn, a tentatively named Death Race set, and Return To Tarkir. The exact details of the Dragonstorm arch are unknown, but Dragonstorms were something that occurred on Tarkir, where the arc ends.

The story of Bloomburrow follows Mabel, a mouse and mother who has to become a hero to save her village. She gathers a party of other critters in order to investigate something that has happened to a neighboring town.

Bloomburrow takes place at the Valley. It is the home to all the animalfolk on the plane, and although it had years of peace and tranquility, its safety is no longer guaranteed as the Great-Night Owl looms over the Valley along with elemental calamity beasts. It’s up to Mabel and her band of critters to stop them before it’s too late.

During their journey, they come across a character from another world – Ral Zarek. Ral Zarek is from the plane of Ravnica who acts as the guildmaster of the Izzet League. The reason for his presence on Bloomburrow is unknown, but he joins Mabel’s party to help them save the Valley. Ral Zarek is normally a human man, but on Bloomburrow, he is transformed into an otter.
