Have you ever been on base? If so (and almost everyone has in this game), then you will need to know how to steal bases in MLB The Show 24. Stealing bases can be a vital aspect of a team’s offensive game. When you need a run desperately, you can steal a base to allow for an easier scoring opportunity. Just like in the real sport, it’s not the easiest thing to pull off, so here’s how you can master it.

How do I steal in MLB The Show 24?

When you have someone on base, press LT (Xbox), ZL (Nintendo Switch), or L2 (PlayStation) to steal a base. You can also do an early steal, but too early will result in the pitcher picking you off. To do this, hold LT (Xbox), ZL (Nintendo Switch), or L2 (PlayStation) and release it when you’re ready to steal.

To determine which runner you want to steal, use either the D-Pad (Button controls) or the button for the right base in Analog:

  • Cross button: Home
  • Circle button: First base
  • Triangle button: Second base
  • Square button: Third base
  • A button: Home
  • B button: First base
  • Y button: Second base
  • X button: Third base
  • B button on Switch: Home
  • A button on Switch: First base
  • X button on Switch: Second base
  • Y button on Switch: Third base

Depending on whether or not you’re playing on Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, or PlayStation 5, the buttons differ. Simply select the right base for the right runner and use the controls above to steal. When doing this, you have to have good timing.

Here’s how we do it: press and hold the steal button for the runner. Once the pitcher makes his move, release it and take off. We recommend doing this for right-handed pitchers as soon as you see any movement, since they can’t start towards home and pivot slightly to first base to catch you.

Lefties can, so you need to be more careful. You can go on first move, but you might get picked off. Once you’re certain they’re throwing home and not to first, you can release it. In general, it’s much easier to steal off of right-handed pitchers. This is how you steal in most modes, such as Franchise Mode, Diamond Dynasty, and other team-based modes.

However, in Road to the Show, it differs. Here, you are the only player you you have control of. Therefore, you don’t need to select the right one. The buttons also differ. The triggers on your controller will either increase or decrease your lead. If the pitcher throws over, hold the right analog stick in the correct direction.

In this scenario, flick it back towards the base. When stealing, flicking it in the direction of the next base will send your runner, so again, be careful with the timing. Stolen bases are great, but pick-offs are not.

Zach’s Tips

When I am running the bases in Road to the Show, I always hold the right stick in the direction of the base while slowly increasing my lead. This way, I will automatically return if they try to pick me off. If I’m stealing, I do the same but flick it in the other direction once ready to run.

In Major League Baseball’s latest game, base-stealing is not easy and it carries a ton of risk, so be smart when you do it.

Stealing is not the only time you need to know how to run the bases and the controls to do so. When you’re batting, you need to know when to advance and when to return. If you want only one runner to run, use the above directions on selecting a runner and then use the right controls.

Press LB, L, or L1 to advance a runner. This is useful if your batter hits a ball in the gap for extra bases or you believe the runner on first can make it to third. If you change your mind in the middle of this, press RB, R, or R1 to retreat. If you’re unsure, such as on a fly ball that might be caught, press RT, RZ or R2 to freeze. Once the ball lands or is caught, you can advance or retreat.

Again, this differs in Road to the Show. The right stick is the control here on offense, so you can hold it towards a base to keep running and turn it back to the previous base if necessary. Be smart on the basepaths, because failures in this mode will cost you dearly in your development.
