Is Like a Dragon Gaiden turn-based? With Kiryu’s latest outing nearly here, players are wondering if the game adapts the turn-based combat of Yakuza: Like a Dragon.

Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name combat explained

No, Like a Dragon Gaiden does not have turn-based combat. It returns to the brawler-based combat from earlier titles. The brutal Yakuza style and sleek Agent style let Kiryu tackle threats in a variety of ways. While the former looks to retain moves from earlier games, there’s a lot of new stuff going on with Agent style.

In previews and trailers, Kiryu showed off some of his new abilities. Being able to use drones and electrified bind wires to fight enemies is incredible. He also gets a rocket boots ability to quickly maneuver between enemies before whaling on them with a flurry of punches. Much of this can be attributed to the new undercover mission undertaken by Kiryu, now codename “Joryu.” He now works for the Daidoji faction and we’ll learn more about their motivations once the game is out.

That covers the combat in Like a Dragon Gaiden not being turn-based. While Yakuza: Like a Dragon featured a neat turn-based system with special attacks and weaknesses, I’m partial to the old-school style of beat-em-ups. In fact, the next turn-based title Infinite Wealth lets Kiryu stick to his brawler core. During a turn, Kiryu will be able to switch into real-time and knock enemies out.
