PUBG (PlayerUnknown BattleGrounds)  is a battle royale game developed and published by PUBG Studios, a subsidiary of Krafton. The game, which was inspired by the 2000 Japanese film Battle Royale, is based on previous mods created by Brendan “PlayerUnknown” Greene for other games and expanded into a standalone game under Greene’s creative direction. In the game, up to one hundred players parachute onto an island where they scavenge for weapons and equipment to kill other players while avoiding getting killed themselves. The available safe area of the game’s map decreases in size over time, directing surviving players into an ever-tightening space to force encounters. The last surviving player (or team) wins the round. It is the first game in the PUBG Universe series.

PUBG: Battlegrounds, having sold over 75 million copies on personal computers and game consoles as of the end of 2021, is the best-selling video game on PC and Xbox One, and the fifth best-selling video game of all time. Even more successful is PUBG Mobile’s global version, which has accumulated more than 1 billion downloads and grossed over $8.42 billion on mobile devices, making it the fourth highest-grossing mobile game. With the combined revenue of PC and console games equaling $4.65 billion, PUBG: Battlegrounds has a total revenue of $13.07 billion as of May 2022, making it one of the highest-grossing video games of all time. The main game has been free-to-play since January 2022.

The highest number of concurrent players was recorded in January 2018 at 3.24 million. In July 2022 on Steam, there were on average ~170 000 concurrent players and the peak number was 390 000 players.

PUBG is a cross platform game and you can play it on many platforms, such as Android, PS, iOS, Microsoft Windows, Xbox One, and Google Stadia.

Is PUBG a cross gen?

Yes, PUBG supports cross-gen compatibility on the following platforms:

  • Xbox
  • PlayStation
  • Stadia

Therefore, Xbox One players can be playing with Xbox Generation X | S and vice versa. Similarly, it is also possible for PlayStation 4 players to match with next-gen PlayStation 5s.

Is PUBG  crossplay?

By enabling crossplay, all console players can play in the same team or against each other in the same matchmaking pools, including custom matches. Platforms that support cross-platform play are Xbox, PlayStation, and Stadia. Hence, PUBG is a crossplay game. This involves all console players (both current and old gen) being able to join the same team or against each other in the same matchmaking pools. This also includes custom matches. You’ll be able to identify players from either Xbox, Playstation, or Stadia through the UI, including kill feed, death box, custom match lobbies, and while spectating. Players playing on the same platform can see their platform logo next to their IGN (in-game name) when the Cross-Platform Play option is “on.”

Players on other platforms can be identified by a controller icon next to their IGN in the kill feed. This can also be seen on their nameplate while spectating. Players on other platforms can be identified in custom match lobbies and the Social hub by a controller icon and a small colored dot next to their IGN.

  • Xbox – Green
  • PlayStation – Blue
  • Stadia – Pink

If you’re a PC user, there is no current way of matchmaking with console players.
