There are 2 main portals in Minecraft, the Nether portal and the End portal. While you can’t actually make the End portal, it’s possible to make a Nether portal in Minecraft anytime, and anywhere you like!

This article will show you how to make a portal in Minecraft!

3 steps to make a Portal in Minecraft

#1 Collect 10 Obsidian

To build a portal in Minecraft, you can use a lot more obsidian than this to fit your needs (easy transportation, farming purposes). But this guide will help you build a nether portal efficiently, with minimal materials.

There are 3 ways to get obsidian in Minecraft. The first one is the most popular one, mining obsidian spawned naturally in the world with a diamond pickaxe. You can also use a netherite pickaxe for this task!

To create obsidian, you need to pour water on top of any lava pool or lava block. If the lava block is touched by any water (either source or flowing), it will be turned into obsidian. Obsidian can also be found in other structures such as woodland mansions, ruined portals, ocean ruins, or obsidian pillars in the End dimension.

The other two ways to get obsidian in Minecraft are to look for chests spawn in structures (bastion remnants, nether fortresses, ruined portals, and villages) or bartering with the piglins. This is a good option if you’re planning to do some kind of challenges like playing Minecraft but starting in the Nether dimension.

#2 Obtain 1 Flint and Steel (Or any fire source)

Flint and Steel can be crafted with 1 iron ingot and 1 flint. To get iron ingot, you can go mining for raw iron and smelt it in the furnace. For the flint, just break some gravel blocks spawn near the rivers.

In addition, you can find flint and steel in chests spawned across the nether fortresses and ruined portals. Ruined portals have a 46.4% chance to spawn with a flint and steel so it’s always a good idea to hunt for them since they already have some obsidian anyway.

#3 Make a Portal

When you have at least 10 obsidian, let’s make a 4 by 5 frame from them. With only 10 obsidian, you need to leave the corner blocks empty, resulting in 2 blocks on the top and bottom border. While there are 3 blocks on either side to create a 2 by 3 gap in the center.

To make a portal work, you need to light it up! Use a flint and steel in step 2 and right-click it on the inside of the portal. Purple particles will appear and you can go into the portal to enter the Nether dimension.

If you don’t have a flint and steel, use a fire charge or put any flammable blocks near the portal still works! As long as you place some fire source like lava near the flammable blocks above. They will slowly catch fire and ignite the portal for you.
