FFXIV might not have the most enormous map in MMORPGs, at least in the first couple of hours players spend playing it, but there’s still nothing better than roaming the lands on a trusty mount, which in this case happens to be a bird.

Of course, the further in expansions you get in the game, the bigger the map you have access to become until eventually, you have to spend a decent amount of time just getting from point 1 to point 2 unless you have a mount.

Therefore, we’re here to tell you how to get a mount in FFXIV and some cool stuff you can do with your partner.

Step 1: Joining a Grand Company

Unfortunately, you can’t get your hands on a mount as soon as you create a character. Instead, you first have to progress in the main story until you reach the point where you’re asked to join one of three grand companies. The mission’s name will be A Hero in the Making, and the three companies you’ll be able to join will be:

  • The Immortal Flames from Ul’dah
  • The Maelstrom from Limsa Lominsa
  • The Order of the Twin Adder in Gridiania

It doesn’t matter which Grand Company you join, but you will still have to complete the initiation questline of the company you join called The Company You Keep.

Completing this quest officially adds you to the ranks of your company so that you could start completing company relates quests to earn company seals, which you’ll be using to unlock your mount.

Step 2: Completing My Little Chocobo

Eventually, you’ll be able to collect a quest from your company’s resident commander called ‘My Little Chocobo’. This quest requires you to give an item called Chocobo insurance to another NPC in your company. Here’s the kicker though. The item requires a whopping 200 company seals to purchase.

Although this amount might not seem like anything big in later parts of the game, if you’ve JUST hit level 20, then getting 200 company seals won’t be easy at all. However, if you’ve been keeping up with your daily roulettes and full time active events, then you might already have a good number of seals.

To get more company seals, we recommend you do one or more of the following

  • Complete FATEs out in the open world (most recommended method)
  • Fill out entries in the Grand Company Hunting Log
  • Undertake supply and provisioning missions

When you have enough company seals, head up to your company quartermaster at the headquarters, and you’ll find the Chocobo Insurance underneath the materiel tab. Purchase it and then go over to the Chocobokeep to speak with the character you were to deliver the item to.

Step 3: Chocobo Time

As a reward for completing the quest, you’ll be given the Chocobo Whistle which you can use to summon your Chocobo mount.

You’ll soon find your Chocobo to be your best friend in this game, as you’ll be able to change its color, rename it, dress it up, and eventually even fight alongside it!

Final Thoughts

That was how to get a mount in FFXIV. With a mount you’ll be able to travel the lands MUCH quicker than you were able to on foot, saving you a bunch of time. Of course, as you progress you’ll find that there will be more mounts for you to get in a variety of ways, but trust us, you never forget your first buddy.
