Square Enix has confirmed during this year’s Game Awards that epic RPG Final Fantasy XVI will officially release in June of 2023.

The release date came alongside a brand new trailer for the game, which was entitled ‘Revenge’ and gave us a little more insight into the story of the game.

In this iteration of the long running series, you’ll play as a character named Clive, who’s tasked with protecting his brother Joshua who is a Dominant – humans who have the ability to summon powers from beings known as Eikons.

Final Fantasy XVI Release Date

As per the announcement, the game will release exclusively for the PlayStation 5 on June 22, 2023.

At the time of writing, it’s not expected to come to other consoles for at least six months. You can check out the trailer shown at the Game Awards for yourself down below.

Leading the production of the game is Yoshi-P AKA Naoki Yoshida, who was previously known for being the producer of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn.

The game was originally announced back in 2020, and will be unusual for a Final Fantasy game in that it’s apparently leading with the English voice dub for the first time.

Final Fantasy XVI Receives M Rating

On top of that, there have been some other interesting language choices made by the game, with Final Fantasy XVI being the first mainline Final Fantasy to receive a Mature rating, traditionally the games have been rated “T” for Teen. This is accompanied by the news the game will feature the f-word.

Last summer, it was also revealed that the game will feature AI assists, to help less experienced players get top grips with the more action focused combat.

Is Final Fantasy XVI a PlayStation Exclusive?

Yes, Final Fantasy XVI is set to be an exclusive for PlayStation 5. This is a shame considering the most iterations were not exclusive to one platform. Only time can tell if this will change.
