Ever wanted to expand your horse army in Minecraft? In this article, we will show you how to breed horses in Minecraft!

How to breed Horses in two steps

If you mainly travel by horse, you will know horses in Minecraft die easily. They can fall to their death, be burnt by the lava, blown up by creepers, or other hostile mobs. That’s why backup is important since you don’t want to manually tame a new horse every time your horse dies.

When you have 2 tamed horses in your base and some leftover food, you can start breeding them. Let’s see how!

#1 Prepare the Food

Horses in Minecraft need golden apples or golden carrots to be able to breed. And you need to feed at least 2 horses at once!

To craft a golden apple, you will need 1 apple and 8 gold ingots. Then follow the crafting recipe below. Remember that you can also use an enchanted golden apple to breed horses.

A golden carrot can be crafted by using the same shape as the golden apple. You need 1 carrot and 8 gold nuggets. As you can see, using golden carrots to breed horses is way cheaper!

#2 Breed your Horses

When you have the food, put the food in your hand and right-click on each horse. This will make them enter the love mode and they will start breeding with another fed horse in a nearby area. If there is no mating friend nearby, the fed horse will exit the love mode after 30 seconds and your food will be wasted.

After a while, a cute fellow foal will spawn near its parent horses. The foal will have a random color and marking on its skin depending on the parent. So if you want a new color or marking, finding a new horse in the wild is the only way!

You may want to wait for the foal to grow up and repeat this breeding process to increase the number of mature horses. To speed up the growth process of the foal, you can feed the below food to the horse to reduce the growth time. Normally, it takes 20 minutes in real life for this process:

  • Sugar: -30 seconds
  • Wheat -20 seconds
  • Apple -1 minute
  • Golden Carrot: -1 minute
  • Golden Apple: -4 minutes
  • Hay Bale: -3 minutes

And that’s all you need to know about how to breed horses in Minecraft!
