  • Darkness is a resource only found at random by visiting Chaos’ realm.
  • You will get one Darkness for free through a dialogue with Chaos.
  • The main use for it is to upgrade higher levels of Grasp of the Arcana.

Hades 2 offers you several ways to improve Melinoe’s chances of success. You’ll have to invest many different resources for incremental power gains and unlocks. While some are simple to find, others are locked behind certain events or bosses. Among some of the rarest pick-ups in the game is Darkness, which you will find and use much later in your trek through Greek myth.

Veterans of the 2018 original will recognize Nyx’s tear-shaped purple gems as one of the basic currencies. In Hades 2, with Nyx and many other Gods nowhere to be seen, Darkness became scarce as well.

Where to find Darkness in Hades 2

Darkness can currently be found only in one place – in the mystical realm of Chaos. The only way to access it is by entering a Chaos Gate. The first hurdle is that Chaos Gates spawn in encounter areas at random. The only way to guarantee a spawn is by buying a curio from the Well of Charon that will guarantee its appearance in the next encounter. Additionally, this curio removes the health cost of entry.

Speaking of health costs, after finding a Chaos Gate, entering one comes at a cost. This is represented in a percentage of your life being lost upon entry (unless you use the curio). With that said, it’s often useful to enter the Chaos Gate regardless because their rewards and rarity warrant exploration.

After meeting Chaos and speaking with them several times, they will mention Darkness and even give out one piece for free. There is no certain way to trigger this interaction, so you will have to visit as often as you can. After that, there will be a random chance to find Darkness whenever you visit Chaos’ realm.

Note that you don’t have to beat Chronos to start encountering Chaos Gates and meet Chaos. Their appearance is random, and with enough interactions, you will gain access to Darkness after a dialogue prompt.

✓ Pro Tip

Finding a Chaos Gate is completely random, so it often pays to enter and get a boon and check if Darkness has spawned inside.

What is Darkness used for?

Darkness is used as a late-game resource for a few upgrades. The main use is to reach higher levels of Melinoe’s Grasp of the Arcana, which allows her to equip more Arcana Cards. As you upgrade this feature, the Psyche cost will add both Shadow and Darkness to the mix. The higher your upgrade level, the higher the scaling costs will be.

Besides that, there is one more use for Darkness currently in the game. You can use it to unlock Aspect of Thanatos for the Moonstone Axe, which is one of your Nocturnal Arms. This aspect costs three Glassrock and one Darkness to unlock.

With that, we can see that Darkness only has scarce few uses, but there is always the chance for more as Hades 2 expands in scope. We need to remember that the game is only in early access, with future updates promising even more features to come.
