God of War Ragnarok – Surviving Fimbulwinter Walkthrough

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the opening chapter of God of War Ragnarok – Surviving Fimbulwinter. Designed as an introduction and a tutorial to the game, Surviving Fimbulwinter shouldn’t pose too many issues as it’s a fairly on-rails journey through the Wildswoods. But, if you’re struggling, here’s a breakdown of how to make it out the other side and continue your journey through God of War Ragnarok.

In the spirit of conserving the experience for all, we’re keeping spoilers and major story elements to a minimum, but for the purpose of explaining puzzle solutions and the like, there are a few in there. You’ve been warned.

Head Home – Surviving Fimbulwinter

Continue forward through the Head Home portion of the chapter until you wake up and gain full control of Kratos. 

Track Atreus

Take a left out of the house down to the dog kennels. Near the back, break through the ice and squeeze through the opening in the rocks to enter the Upper Wildwoods.

Take on a group of raiders then interact with the log on your left to raise it and pass under. Continue forward until your path is barred by a ravine. Take a right into the cave, looting the chest, then back to the gap. Shoot the log with your axe. 

Jump across and head forward. There are three paths. Take the middle one and continue up several ledges sticking left to loot a chest. Backtrack down one ledge then head left. Continue forward, then crouch and make your way through the tunnel.

In the opening take down the several raiders, then make your way up sticking left, taking out the raiders as you go. Climb up to the bridge above. Loot the chest for some forged iron and hacksilver.

Cross the bridge and shoot the bucket, then head right. Loot the chest and squeeze into the cave. Once inside, dispatch the raiders and gather up all the loot, including where the bucket fell.

The next room contains your first ranged raiders so take them out first to avoid issues. Loot the area, including the chest straight ahead. Make your way up and out the otherside of the cave.

Here you’ll take on a massive bear. The fight is fairly forgiving, simply make sure to dodge his attacks, especially the ones marked by a red circle. Otherwise, it’s a case of chipping down its health bar.

Return Home with Atreus – Surviving Fimbulwinter

Break the log straight ahead and continue forward down the path and into the cave, taking out the raiders as you meet them and looting along the way. You’ll return to the path you took previously, but in reverse. You’ll meet a few more raiders along the way. Squeeze through the rocks and make your way back up to the house.

Unexpected visitors show and a fight with none other than Thor ensues. It’s a long-winded battle so be sure to dodge his attacks and get in hits were possible. 

Return Home to Atreus

Follow the path up and into Brok and Sindri’s workshop. Step through the portal and into the house.

Follow Atreus into the Forest – Surviving Fimbulwinter

Head out of the gates into Lower Wildwoods. Continue forward and chain up the large wall. Open the chest of your left and follow the path, then burn the bramble with the Blades of Chaos. 

Head right at the broken bridge and pull down the wood door with the Blades. Climb up and fight the raider with the Blades then head forward. Once at the open-roofed cave monument, going left leads to a chest that you access by burning the bramble with your Blades. Forward leads to a deadend, so go right, fight the two raiders and squeeze through the gap.

Drop down the ledge, then another ledge on the right and loot the chest. Head back up and right into the cave. Fight the raiders and go through the next squeeze. Move the pillar with the Blades and hop across the gap. Once across, move the pillar back. 

Head up and pull the rope taut, then slide down. Drop down and take out the raiders that appear. Charging up your Blades gives you an edge here so it is recommended. Once the fight is over, burn the bramble with the Blades and squeeze through the gap.

Defeat the raiders. Interact with the Winter-man rune on the rock to the right, then climb up the icy rock face ahead. There are another two raiders to fight and then an encounter with The Huntress. She offers up a good fight, but aim for her horns to gain an advantage. Loot her body for some supplies and the Winter’s Bite rune.

Continue up the next icy face, and take a left at the top to find The Ashen God scroll and chest. Return to the top of the icy face and head right. Pass through the cave into an open area. Go right to find a squeeze spot leading to a chest. There’s another chest on an elevated platform on the left of the area.

Shoot the log to the right of the pillar, then interact with the pillar itself to move it out of the way. Continue forward into the shrine to open a concealed passage.

Return Home

Drop down the ledge, and open the gate to loot the chest. Stick left to the find chest after climbing descending a couple ledges. Head left, but take a right and look down to the area below. Interact to crack open the floor. Drop down to loot a chest. Return to the ledge above and this time continue to the end of the path, kick down the chain and drop down.

Fight off a horde of raiders then move the log. Follow the path, loot the chest, and climb up the ledge, then drop down to reach the house.

Follow Sindri – Surviving Fimbulwinter

Follow Sindri to the portal in front of the house. Step through. And with that, Surviving Fimbulwinter comes to an end.
