How To Defeat Heimdall

Heimdall doesn’t fall in one swoop. He has multiple phases, three to be exact, with each one followed by a cut scene. During each phase, he gains new attacks and abilities while also becoming stronger. Below we give a breakdown of each phase and how to deal with Heimdall in each one of them.

Defeating Gulltopr

Before you can fight Heimdall, you have to take down his mount, Gulltopr. This one isn’t supposed to be a difficult fight since Gulltopr doesn’t have a lot of mobility, and his attacks are slow and telegraphed.

Parry or dodge the yellow-ring attacks, and remember to hit L1 twice for the double blue-ring attacks to stop them with your shield bash. Gulltopr doesn’t have a lot of health either, so you should be able to defeat him quickly. Afterward, Heimdall will dismount, commencing the first stage of this boss fight, Phase One.

Phase One – Heimdall – God of War

Once you defeat Gulltopr, you’ll come face to face with the man himself, Heimdall. In the first phase of the fight, you must use the Draupnir Spear, a weapon acquired during the Forging Destiny chapter, if you wish to stand your ground against him. So if you have yet to start using the spear, now’s a good time to pull it out.

The reason is that all other weapons are too predictable for him. In the first phase, Heimdall is quite passive, only making a few lunge attacks that you can dodge by simply rolling over to the right.

To damage him, throw your spears on the ground where he might step. Once you’ve laid the spears in his path, detonate them as he walks over them to damage and stun him. It will take multiple spear detonations to stun Heimdall, but once he is finally stunned, you’ll see an R3 prompt over his head that will triggers a cutscene of Kratos trying to punch his face.

Keep repeating this until you fill-up the bar and hit R3 to start a cutscene where Kratos finally succeeds in hurting his face, after which Heimdall loses his cool and becomes super aggressive.

Phase Two – Heimdall – God of War

After getting hit, Heimdall will start using his dash attacks and his Bifrost smashes, which cause area-of-effect damage. He will now also be vulnerable to melee attacks and damage. Use your melee combos when he is stunned right after a parry or when he is at the end of his attack animations. Combine that with your spear detonations to maximize damage when he dashes out of range.

Throughout the fight, Heimdall will become empowered with Bifrost abilities. He will charge up an additional white health bar over his original one, which will shield him from melee attacks. You’ll have to throw spears at him and detonate them to deplete this protective bar. Once it goes down, you can start executing melee attacks again.

Once he is low on health, you’ll get another R3 prompt. This time around, Kratos will cut off Heimdall’s hand. Doing so will start the last phase of this boss fight.

Phase Three – Heimdall – God of War

After losing his arm, the watchman of the Aesir will become a lot more aggressive with stronger charge attacks and area-of-effect damage. The basic principle is to always dodge to the right, just like when facing Gulltoppr. The only time this doesn’t work is when he charges up his fist for an AoE attack, in which case dodge backward twice to escape the area damage.

In his final form, Heimdall attacks and moves much faster. The basic tactic remains the same; however, you must parry his attacks to stagger him and then get off as many attacks as possible. Afterward, fall back and dodge his charged attacks. You can defeat this formidable foe if you keep repeating this strategy.

After his health is significantly depleted, you will get an R3 prompt to finish him off. Kratos ends up choking him to death even though Mirmir tries to stop him. Even with his last breath, Heimdall taunts Kratos by calling him a monster.
