The Finals is a unique FPS game in many ways, which helps it be distinct in a highly-contested genre. Coming from Embark Studios, who boast many veterans from the Battlefield series, the game has managed to carve a niche for itself as a viable free-to-play option. Some of the main draws include its colourful style, fast-paced gameplay, and of course, destructible environments. However, if you want to take a break from The Finals and try something similar yet different, we can offer you a few suggestions.

Titanfall 2 falls into an odd niche for online gaming. Considered old by today’s standards, since it released in 2016, Titanfall 2 revolutionized many gaming aspects that became standard. Even today, you can find a dedicated online multiplayer community, with several recent updates. The multiplayer gameplay will look very familiar to arena shooter fans, including those playing The Finals. In Titanfall, you play as a Pilot with your very own mech called a Titan. You can customize your loadouts, and each chassis comes with its set of pros and cons. The main drawback is that Titanfall 2 is a game you have to pay for, so it’s not as easy to try out.

BattleBit Remastered may not look like much on the surface, lacking the flashy graphics of most popular shooter games. However, its low-poly graphics come with several advantages over the others. For one, it can handle up to 254 players in a single match. Yeah, you read that number right! That makes matches in BattleBit true battles between large groups, with constant chaos and destruction. Speaking of destruction, just like in The Finals, you can destroy environments in this game too. With a range of over 40 weapons to choose from and 19 maps, BattleBit Remastered is a fun, chaotic experience that you can get at a pretty low cost.

The successor to the acclaimed original from 2016, Overwatch 2 is another hero-based team shooter mixed with many MOBA elements. Many games have taken inspiration from Overwatch, and The Finals is no different. Some specializations and gadgets bear a clear resemblance to their OW2 counterparts. Gunplay is quite different, however, with Overwatch 2 emphasizing each hero’s different skillset. Still, the roles between OW2’s heroes and Builds in The Finals will look familiar if you decide to give it a try. Fortunately, you can play Overwatch 2 for free through the Battle.net client and Steam.
XDefiant

Coming from Ubisoft, XDefiant is one of the latest FPS team shooters on the market. You play as characters from different Ubisoft properties, with each faction bringing a different set of abilities. Then, you combine that with your weapon of choice to take on different challenges across various game modes. In many ways, that will sound familiar to The Finals players, with XDefiant relying on larger teams and clearer objectives. Still, there will be many transferable skills from one game to the other, and you will feel right at home if you give it a try. And like The Finals, XDefiant is also free to play through the Ubisoft Connect app.
The Halo series is known for its intense multiplayer modes, and Halo Infinite was the logical next step for the franchise. While you can purchase the campaign mode to play separately, the multiplayer is free to play for everyone. Halo Infinite is a classic arena shooter at its core, with over 70 maps to play on. There’s room for a huge variety of customizations for your loadouts, with many different game modes to try. One of the biggest draws is the Forge – a community-driven platform where players can customize nearly any aspect of the game and then share it with others to try out and play.
The Call of Duty franchise needs little to no introduction. One of the latest sequels for the popular online shooter is Modern Warfare 3, which further refined the formula known to players over the years. You can play the classic MW3 battles, join Warzone for a battle-royale experience, and there’s even a fully supported Zombie mode. The gunplay from The Finals will look familiar to you in many ways if you try Modern Warfare 3. However, prepare for a slower game than you’re used to. As you’d expect, there are in-depth weapon customization systems that let you tailor your operator to your liking. However, the game is not free to play, so you’ll have to make the decision to buy it if you want to try it out.

Rainbow Six Siege was released by Ubisoft in 2015. It’s part of Tom Clancy’s series of games, this time focusing on the tactical shooter approach. Like in The Finals’ Power Shift and Terminal Attack modes, teams in R6S are comprised of five operators per side. Each operator fulfils a role in the team, with options to tailor their loadouts for the mission ahead. The game is slower than The Finals, favouring a slower, more methodical approach. However, when the gunfights ensue, they can be just as explosive and dynamic. And unlike The Finals, Rainbow Six Siege is not free to play – instead, you’ll have to buy it from Ubisoft’s store for around $20.
Battlefield 2042 was released in 2021 as another entry into the long-standing shooter franchise. The game is set in a near-future world reminiscent of our own, in which global superpowers engage in deadly battles. You take on the role of one of the soldiers, or more appropriately, one of the Specialists, as the classes are called. They fall into one of four categories – Assault, Engineer, Medic, and Recon. True to the Battleflied experience, the game leans more towards mass combat than smaller team engagements. In fact, you’ll take part in battles numbering up to 128 players, across one of the three main game modes. The game is available on both consoles and PC and can usually be found at a discount.
