Getting out is a simple button press

  • To exit your Power Armor in either Fallout 4 or Fallout 76, press A on your controller or E on your keyboard
  • Be aware that Power Armor can be stolen, especially by an NPC called Trashcan Carla, a local caravan merchant

The Brotherhood of Steel’s iconic Power Armor in both Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 is arguably the most powerful outfit you can wear in either game. Usually, you’ll stumble across the odd piece here and there while you venture across the Commonwealth. If you’re lucky, you’ll come across a full suit.

For those new to the game, which will be many as it is currently seeing a huge influx of players following the success of Amazon Prime’s Fallout TV show, you’ll soon discover that getting out of the Power Armor isn’t as obvious as you’d think as there are no on-screen prompts.

Why would you want to take off Power Armor, I hear you ask? That’s because the suit runs on Fusion Cores, which drain over time. So, you’re going to want to conserve as much as you can for enemy encounters, and not waste your time burning it up exploring the Commonwealth.

So, how do I take off the Power Armor in Fallout 4 and Fallout 76?

To take off the Power Armor in Fallout 4 and Fallout 76, you need to hold ‘A’ if you’re using an Xbox controller or hold ‘E’ if you’re using a keyboard and mouse. On a PlayStation controller, hold ‘X’ (Cross). This will then trigger an animation, opening up the rear part of the armor. Your character will then jump out. You can do this anywhere, although we advise not leaving it around, which we come on to shortly. Should you need to get out of the armor to replace a Fusion Core, wait for the rear to close, and you’ll be given the option to remove the core and replace it with a new one.

Can my Power Armor get stolen?

There are a couple of things to consider if you do decide to exit your Power Armor. Should you leave it with a decent, working Fusion Core in there, it’s very likely to get stolen or used by NPCs.

For example, when your Settlement comes under attack, one of the NPCs, Trashcan Carla, can often be seen sporting your Power Armor, should it have power. Sadly, she’ll then keep wearing it and traverse the Commonwealth, making it a real pain to get back. Should you want to retrieve it, you’re going to need to pickpocket her Fusion Core, which will deactivate the armor, or wait for her to arrive at Bunker Hill where she takes it off.

Elsewhere, if you leave your armor close to Fusion Cores, as demonstrated in this YouTube video, settlers will grab the cores, whack them in the armor, and then suit up if they’re under attack.
