Death Stranding 2 auto drive makes plodding across Australia and Mexico in a Pickup Off-Roader stacked with cargo a little less tedious. The feature only works on roads within regions connected to the Chiral Network, but allows you to travel long distances with having to hold down R2 and push the thumbstick to stay on course.

It’s basically hands-free driving with the game automatically steering the vehicle along a road without any input required. In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to unlock and use auto drive in Death Stranding 2. How to unlock auto drive

To unlock auto drive, you’ll need to progress the story until you reach Australia during Episode 3 Drawbridge. After travelling through the plate gate, board the DHV Magellan and meet Charlie. Sit through the cut scene then leave your Private Room, interact with the Delivery Terminal, and accept Order 009 to unlock APAS Enhancements.

Among the first few default APAS Enhancements that are unlocked is Self-Driving Support – the in-game term for auto drive. When activated it allows vehicles to drive themselves and activates upon reaching a certain speed without boosting when driving in the centre of a road. It costs 100 APAS Enhancement memory to activate, which you can do by tapping pause, opening up the Ring Menu, and heading to APAS Enhancements.

How to use auto drive in Death Stranding 2

To use auto drive, you’ll need to drive on the powered-strip at the centre of a road and accelerate using R2 without using the L3 boost feature. After a few seconds, a gauge of the screen on the back of the vehicle will start to fill up and show ASST DRV BOOT. When the gauge is full up, the screen will display ASST DRV, confirming auto drive is activated. You’ll also see an on-screen prompt to use toggle Auto-Camera, a surefire sign that self-driving is active.

From there, you can release R2 and the left thumbstick to let the car drive itself. To stop auto drive, either boost using L3 or veer off the road and you’ll regain full control of the vehicle. Remember that it only works on roads within the Chiral Network and only when driving the Pickup Off-Roader so won’t function for the Tri-Cruiser.
