Sonic the Hedgehog is celebrating his 35th anniversary this year, and as is tradition with previous birthdays, developer Sega is planning on marking it in several ways. We could see new compilations and games, much like how Sonic Origins and Sonic Frontiers were announced for the 30th.
However, Sega can go further to mark the Sonic 35th anniversary. With the fourth movie set for 2027, and rumors of new games coming soon, there’s a chance to see other announcements. Here are five ways that Sega can make the 35th one to remember.
Sonic Adventure Collection

Sonic Adventure was the blue blur’s proper 3D debut, releasing on the Sega Dreamcast in 1999, followed by an enhanced release in 2003 for GameCube and PC, known as Sonic Adventure DX. While a sequel followed a few years later, it’s almost baffling that there’s still no easy way to play both games on modern consoles.
This is why Sega should revisit these games and remaster them. Imagine both games were given the same treatment as shown by modders, such as sharper text and higher-resolution textures. Playing these on a Switch 2 would be fantastic, and a great way to introduce players to Sonic’s early 3D entries.
Sonic Mania 2

Sonic Mania arguably marked a renaissance for 2D Sonic. Created by a team of fans who had long been making hacks and improvements to previous Sonic games, this 2017 release was a breath of fresh air for fans, especially after the mess of Sonic 4 a few years earlier. Created as if for the Sega Saturn, Sonic Mania took what worked and elevated it.
There were alleged plans for the same team to work on another entry, but Sega decided to go with 2021’s Sonic Superstars instead, which wasn’t as well-received. It’s high time for a Sonic Mania 2, with new zones, characters, and bonus stages that give the impression of a 2D Sonic game released for the Saturn as its swansong.
Who’s voicing Amy in the Sonic 4 movie

Spoilers for anyone who hasn’t seen 2024’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3, but a post-credits scene reveals Metal Sonic, the antagonist from 1993’s Sonic CD, as well as Amy Rose, a pink hedgehog who also debuted in the same game. With filming reportedly beginning soon for a 2027 release, the 35th anniversary seems the perfect time to unveil the actor voicing Amy.
Plenty of rumors suggest Sabrina Carpenter, Bree Olsen, and Kat Dennings. A Sonic 4 Movie announcement later this year to unveil this could be a great way to kick off the hype train for the movie, as well as reveal more details as we approach the 2027 premiere.
Bring more games to Nintendo Classics Online

As of January 2026, you can play a few Sonic titles on the Nintendo Classics Online retro service on Switch platforms, such as the first two games and Sonic Spinball on the Sega Genesis app. But with the ability to play games from other consoles and handhelds like the GameCube and Game Boy Advance (GBA), there’s a big opportunity here.
Let’s see the three Sonic Advance games come to the GBA app, especially as they haven’t seen a re-release since the Wii U Virtual Console in 2016. In addition, there are GameCube games, such as Sonic Heroes, Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic Mega Collection, which includes Sonic R.. This feels like the easiest win for all involved.
A Digital Eclipse release of cut content

This one is a long shot, but bear with us. Digital Eclipse’s previous releases include Mega Man Legacy Collection, Tetris Forever, and Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection. Seeing them take on a Sonic Collection, complete with concept art, playable cut zones, and prototypes from Knuckles Chaotix and Sonic Adventure, would be a huge deal.
If you know where to look, there are plenty of sites that maintain libraries of cut Sonic content, some of which is available in downloadable games. But to have these sanctioned by Sega, complete with developer interviews, would enhance the early Sonic games and give fans closure around why some levels were cut.
