Sonic CD, the Mega CD title that first introduced Metal Sonic and Amy Rose, will be released for XBLA, PSN, PC, iPhone, iPad, Android and Windows Phone 7 this winter, SEGA has announced.

The re-release promises enhanced widescreen graphics, iOS features, Xbox LIVE Achievements, PSN Trophies, PC Achievements and more. Importantly, the game will also launch with the original Japanese soundtrack.

“Ask any Sonic fan to name their favourite games, and Sonic CD always ranks near the top of their lists,” said Haruki Satomi, vice president of digital business at SEGA. “Sonic CD marks an important chapter in Sonic’s history, bridging the gap between his oldest adventures and his new digital exploits like Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Episode I. We’ve made sure the re-mastered edition has everything that Sonic fans want to see with all of the original colourful classic zones.”

Sonic CD follows the blue blur as he attempts to rescue Amy Rose from the clutches of evil. Robotnik’s up to his old tricks, and has engineered an evil robotic version of Sonic to do his nefarious bidding. This is the first time both Amy and Metal Sonic were introduced to the Sonic universe.

It’s interesting that SEGA has decided to brand Sonic CD as the ‘prequel’ to Sonic 4, with many people suspecting that this is a sly move on SEGA’s behalf to fill the gap between Episode 1 and Episode 2 – which isn’t due out until next year.
