The FTC v. Epic Games settlement was caused by the lack of Fortnite features
Fortnite has been one of the most popular video games since its release in 2017. It’s a free video game, and the only way for Epic Games to make a profit is by selling cosmetic items. Unfortunately, the game developer did not implement features to prevent accidental purchases until recently.
In the past, it was not possible to get refunds in Fortnite. Epic then released refund tickets in Chapter 1 – Season 4, but this still didn’t prevent accidental purchases. As a result, many players have purchased cosmetics from the Item Shop without wanting to do so.
On top of this, players who complained about unwanted charges had their accounts locked.
The FTC fined the Fortnite developer $275 in late 2022 for these practices. In addition, as part of the FTC v. Epic Games settlement, the company has to provide eligible players with refunds.
