Features to consider when looking for Cyber Monday gaming PC deals
Price is obviously the most important thing to look out for, but before you buy anything do a deep-dive into the product specs yourself to confirm. For example, you’ll want to make sure you’re buying reasonably dated components rather than something first manufactured many years ago.
The most important things in a gaming PC for us are the CPU, GPU, motherboard, RAM, and SSD. It’s important to do your own research into how these components operate.
CPU
This component plays a role in the processing capabilities of your computer, and it’s really integral to performance. In our opinion, it has a shared importance with the GPU for gaming performance. Don’t cut corners with this. We recommend prioritising a few key specs: clock speed, cache, cores, threads, socket type (this is really important – make sure you grab a CPU and Motherboard with compatible socket types.) What with Intel 14th gen newly releasing last month, we’re expecting anything older to enjoy some good value discounts.
GPU
Like the CPU, the graphics card is crucial for gaming performance. It renders all visuals onto the screen, so is responsible for silky smooth 4K graphics you salivate over. Similar to the CPU, a quality GPU is worth the investment.
Motherboard
The motherboard acts as a hub connecting all of the processing components. Deciding for yourself on a quality motherboard can be difficult, especially considering their entirely ambiguous standards of quality. It’s important to choose a motherboard with the right form factor for your PC, the correct socket type (which essentially forces you to choose between Intel and AMD for the CPU), and the chipsets enabled by your motherboard.
Memory
Having enough quick RAM is crucial for reducing loading times and reducing the overall load on other components in your PC. You have various decisions when choosing RAM, such as speed, channel type, and capacity.
Storage
Generally, an SSD is preferred for gaming and loading your OS off. Though, there are several types of SSD. M.2, PCIe, and SATA.
PCIe and M.2 interface SSDs are generally preferred over SATA which is not industry standard anymore.
Black Friday gaming PC FAQs
How do I know if a gaming PC is good?
A gaming PC’s performance can generally be gauged by four main components and related factors;
- CPU: clock speed, cache, cores, threads, socket types
- GPU: memory, clock speed, CUDA cores
- RAM: speed, capacity, type
- Storage: type and capacity
It will take some market research of your own and general understanding of how Gaming PCs are composed to understand this. As mentioned before, we recommend doing some research on WePC.
Should I build my own gaming PC?
Building your own PC is generally more cost effective. This is our preferred method if you are confident with technology. It’s an incredibly rewarding process and there’s nothing really like it.
It’s important to have really good points of references when building your own PC. Keep all of the component’s guides handy, and make sure that you have researched well before.
We recommend building your own PC due to the level of customisation available. Being able to calibrate a PC to your exact needs is an extremely valuable process.
Should I buy a pre-built gaming PC?
If you are not confident with building your own gaming PC, buying a pre-built machine is an extremely valid response. There’s little harm in letting someone else do all of the dirty work, in fact it’s probably beneficial to let a professional do it in mere minutes, compared to the hours you might spend trying to figure out where the RAM goes.
Ready as soon as you receive it, a pre-built gaming PC is extremely handy in its time-saving capabilities.
One notable concern is the lack of true customisation available to you, and the slightly higher base asking price.
