Activision’s Call of Duty games have continued to split player opinions with their use of in-game cosmetics. From bringing in Warhammer 40K to skins of pop star Nicki Minaj, many gamers have become disenfranchises with crazy skins that break the games’ military aesthetic. However, Black Ops 6 developer Treyarch is doubling down on wild skins.

With a Squid Game crossover already confirmed, any hope of Black Ops 6 skins featuring some semblance of realism has gone out the window. In addition to this, one Treyarch dev says it plans to “break the rules” for future cosmetic bundles.

Black Ops 6 skins will continue craziness

In an interview with Dexerto, Treyarch’s associate creative director Miles Leslie spoke on striking a balance between fun and realism when designing Black Ops 6 skins. “We want to stay grounded in the DNA that makes a Black Ops game unique, but we also like to break the rules if it’s going to maximise fun for players” Leslie reveals.

“When it comes to cosmetics, the Black Ops series naturally lends itself to some pretty outlandish themes,” adds Leslie, which partly explains some of the diverse designs that have already appeared during the first post-launch season.

As expected, the comments have sparked further debate between realistic Black Ops 6 skins and the more unorthodox designs. “Mixed feelings on this. While some are creative and fun it can just ruin the game’s atmosphere when I get hit by Godzilla with a golf club for example,” comments one fan.

Content creator NerosCinema believes the bright colours and outlandish skins are a ploy for Activision to generate maximum revenue from microtransactions. “Maximise fun means maximise shop sales. The cosmetics we earn from challenges and Prestiging are grounded. The stuff in the shop is just outlandish so people will buy things to stand out.”

Can balance be achieved?

Calls for Treyarch to implement a toggle so players can avoid the more unusual Black Ops 6 skins have continued. Adding such a feature would give those who want to see the realistic mil-sim cosmetics the option to do so while those who want to see a glowing green dragon hurtling around Nuketown can do that too.

Ultimately, Call of Duty is all about having fun and if that’s in the form of equipping a rubber duck skin or equipping an outfit inspired by an SAS operative from the early 1990s, there will always be something to suit everyone’s taste.
