It has been a frustrating time to be a Helldivers 2 player over the past couple of days. Sony announced that all Steam players of the game will be required to link a PSN account to keep playing from May 30th. Although some players simply didn’t want to create an account for various reasons, from security concerns to just not wanting to be forced to, some players are unable to because of country restrictions.

There are currently more than 120 countries across the world where PSN services are unavailable, meaning they will have no way to make a PSN account, which has left many players unsure of whether they will be able to continue playing Helldivers 2 once May 30th rolls around. After much backlash from the community, it seems as though Arrowhead Game Studios is fighting to ensure that no player will be affected by this change.

Spitz, the Associate Community Manager for Helldivers 2, took to Discord to assure players who are in any of the 120+ affected countries that are unable to access PSN services that they will not be required to make an account, thus not be banned from playing the game.

“If a better solution isn’t provided for players who are in regions without PSN coverage, I’m assured that we won’t be making the requirement mandatory for those players. We’re not going to force people to either break Sony TOS or not play the game.”

This is fantastic news as only 69 countries can legally access PSN services, leaving players in over 120 countries unable to make an account but still able to purchase the game on Steam. Although nothing has been announced by Sony regarding this, it does seem like Arrowhead Game Studios is on the side of the community and will continue to work with the publisher to resolve this issue in a way that will benefit players.

While a lot of players are understandably frustrated, with some mass review bombing the game, it seems like everyone can continue to bring democracy to the galaxy and not have to worry about what the future holds for Helldivers 2. This will undoubtedly harm the public perception of Helldivers 2, at least in the short term, Arrowhead Game Studios has been incredibly community-driven since the game’s launch, so any trust should quickly be regained.

With it looking like this will be resolved without issue, it is time to get back to liberating the galaxy and defending Super Earth against the Terminid’s new super colony. A new Premium Warbond titled Polar Patriots is set to release on May 9th, which could shake up the meta.
