UPDATE – 10/12/2014: In a follow-up statement provided to VideoGamer.com, Square Enix confirmed that Microsoft will be publishing Rise of the Tomb Raider and that the platform holder will help provide “support across development, marketing and retail”.

“Yes, Microsoft will be publishing ‘Rise of the Tomb Raider’ on Xbox,” Square Enix said. “Microsoft has always seen huge potential in ‘Tomb Raider’ and they will get behind this game with more support across development, marketing and retail than ever before, which we believe will be a step in continuing to build the ‘Tomb Raider’ franchise as one of the biggest in gaming.”

ORIGINAL STORY: Rise of the Tomb Raider will be published by Microsoft, not Square Enix, Xbox marketing director Aaron Greenberg has confirmed.

Confirmation follows a period of confusion over whether Square or Microsoft would be publishing the title, which is due to roll out first on Xbox One and Xbox 360 late next year.

The platform holder originally announced that Microsoft Studios would be publishing the game, but later removed the reference from its press release.

Confusion over the deal forced Xbox boss Phil Spencer to confirm that the exclusivity period “has a duration”, suggesting that the game could later be ported to PS3, PS4 and PC.

Square Enix has never formally announced intended platforms for the title.
