With the exciting announcement of the Quest 3, we’ve now seen an alluring Meta Quest 2 price drop. So, how does the previous-gen VR headset cost now?

The Meta Quest 2 arrived on the scene in October 2020, when VR was in an even more infant stage. Since its release, Meta introduced the Quest Pro, and has recently announced the Quest 3 with a release date speculated for September 27th. In an effort to bring VR to the masses, Meta is lowering the price of the Quest 2 by $100 and have introduced a performance upgrade. That means the Quest 2 128GB model only costs $299. Meanwhile, the 256GB model now costs $349.

According to Meta, the Quest 2 has received a 26% CPU performance upgrade and up to 19% GPU increase. With these changes, you can expect smoother gameplay, richer content and a smoother UI. This means games and other apps can take advantage of an increased pixel density without dropping frame rates. It’s certainly earned its place amongst the best VR headsets.

So, while Quest 3 is designed to usher in a new standard of VR reality, expected to compete with Apple’s unannounced mixed reality headset, the Quest 2 will remain Meta’s most affordable entry point into VR.

Quest 2 price drop – is it worth it?

Whether or not you choose to invest in Meta Quest 2 will depend on your budget and assessment of current and next-gen headsets on offer. The announcement of the Quest 3 no doubt offers a host of tempting upgrades from the Quest 2. Since these VR headsets are all relatively early models means you can expect significant performance leaps between each one. However, the Quest 2 has now had a performance boost, and its $100 certainly makes it a more affordable model. If you’re curious about the early world of VR, then the Quest 2 offers a good way into the “magic” for a fairer price. That being said, the Quest 3 will have an MSRP of less than $500 which is still a good price for a current-gen headset.
