The Vive XR Elite is HTC’s upcoming VR headset, and while it looks like it’s going to be great for gaming, you might be wondering if it can be used as a screen.

The Vive XR Elite, much like the Meta Quest Pro, falls into the premium product range, and though gaming might be the optimum use-case for it, if you’re wanting to make it double up as your PC screen, you might be slightly disappointed.

The Vive XR Elite, though it hasn’t been released yet, can be used as a Android screen. We learned that this is a confirmed feature thanks to the Vive XR Elite set-up guide, which highlights the various different uses of the headset.

The Vive XR Elite uses software called Vive Streaming, which shares visual output rendered by your PC to the headset, from there, you can essentially use your Vive XR Elite as your portable Android screen. It seems logical that this same software could then be used to cast your PC screen onto the Vive XR Elite, however, there’s absolutely no mention of this anywhere.

After we had a close look at the set-up guide, we noticed that the Vive XR Elite can stream SteamVR-compatible titles from your PC to your headset, however there was no mention of streaming your PCs display to the headset. This doesn’t mean that it’s not possible, just that it could be a feature implemented in the future.

How to use Vive XR Elite as a screen?

While the Vive XR Elite doesn’t natively have screen-mirroring as a feature, you will be able to use third-party software to stream your screen to the headset. One of the most popular and widely used softwares is Virtual Desktop, which is expected to receive compatibility with the Vive XR Elite at some point soon.

However, this does require a fairly decent graphics card, so you might need to double check you have one of the best GPUs for VR before you give it a go.

We’re going to be keeping an eye out for the latest updates on the Vive XR Elite, which you can pre-order now. While you wait for it to launch, you might be interested to see how it compares with the recently released PSVR 2, and if that doesn’t interested you, what will?
