If you were wondering what date the rumoured Google Pixel Fold might release, we’ve got you covered.
The latest craze in smartphones is foldable phones. This is great for the dramatic among us who desperately miss the satisfaction of snapping your phone shut after a particularly trying conversation.
We’ve had the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 for a while, and similarly, Microsoft gave us the Microsoft Surface Duo 2. The Surface Duo 2 came out in September 2021 had 5G, Dual PixelSense Fusion Displays, and a triple lens camera. But we haven’t had a Google foldable phone yet. Until now, that is, if the rumors are to be believed.
Let’s have a look at how soon that ‘now’ might be.
Google Pixel Fold release date rumors and leaks
In short, nothing is confirmed; but Google I/O is happening on May 10 and this is likely the earliest we would hear something concrete about a ‘Google Pixel Fold’. Let’s get into that.
Google I/O is an event hosted to announce news on their latest products, provide technical sessions through workshops and codelabs, and connect developers.
It’s possible that this could be the perfect moment for Google to unveil their offering to the foldable phone market. The Pixel 6a was announced at last year’s Google I/O, and back at the 2019 Google I/O they announced the Pixel 3A and 3A XL. So there’s absolutely a precedent for unveiling new phones at these events.
Unfortunately, this doesn’t match what the rumors are saying. Analyst Ross Young, when asked about the ‘Pixel foldable‘, had this to say:

We’re not sure about this prediction though, because… here is Ross’s earlier other Google Pixel Fold prediction:

Which at the time of writing doesn’t look likely to happen. Still, Google I/O remains a possibility for a Pixel Fold release date, but we’re trying not to get our hopes up here seeing as the evidence is pretty circumstantial.
Google Pixel Fold release date speculation
Normally, at this point we would have a look at previous release timings to see if there is any precedent that Google may be following.
The thing with the ‘Google Pixel Fold’ is that it would be the first foldable phone in Google’s line up, so there is no precedent. On the other hand, Google is currently pushing their New Pixel 7 Pro, and Pixel 7 models. These were released on October 13, 2022. So the last flagship release was pretty recent. Will that impact the potential release of a foldable model?
9to5Google don’t think so. They claim that there was hidden information about the Google Pixel Fold hidden in the Android 12L Beta 2 operating system. But even the people who released these images say to ‘take them with a grain of salt’ so while it’s interesting … it’s not actually reliable. At all.
In a similar pinch-of-salt vein, Front Page Tech are predicting a May 2023 release date. But, again, they did not state their sources and provided no hard proof other than a couple of rendered images that have no proof of veracity.
In light of that, the earliest we might see a release date for the Google Pixel Fold is in the months after Google I/O.
We’ll certainly be keeping a close eye on the proceedings so watch this space for more information.
