At the time of its release, the Xbox Series X used a Scarlett GPU which relied on AMD’s RDNA 2 architecture, which was new and improved at the time of the Xbox X being announced in 2019. Which means that while the Xbox’s GPU isn’t out of date, it is substantially older than the new architecture found in the RTX 4070 Ti Super, which was released January 2024, as a newer and more improved version of the RTX 40 series.

In terms of the basics, the RTX 4070 Ti Super is built on Ada Lovelace architecture, which was first introduced by Nvidia in the RTX 40 series, released in 2022; this architecture uses AI-enhanced tools (such as Ray tracing and DLSS 3) and tensor cores to create a powerful, accelerated GPU for the great performance during gameplay or creation projects. Meanwhile, Xbox Series X uses AMD RDNA 2 architecture, which was first announced at E3 in 2019. RDNA 2 also features Raytracing and is fully supported by DirectX12. 

One of the biggest selling points of the RTX 4070 Ti Super, and RTX 4070 Super, is that their power consumption is competitively lower than other Nvidia GPUs, such as the RTX 3090, with the Ti Super having a relatively low power consumption of 285W. That being said, the Xbox Series X’s Scarlett has an impressive power consumption of only 200W, meaning that it is more power efficient out of the two. 

Nvidia does win in terms of clock speed, with a Core Clock speed of 2340MHz and a Boost Clock speed of 2610MHz, vs the Xbox Series X with 1825MHz and 1725MHz respectively. The RTX 4070 Ti Super also has more RAM with 16GB and higher bandwidth of 716.8GB/s, while Xbox only boasts 10GB, with a lower bandwidth of 560.0GB/s. Xbox does however have a higher memory bus of 320, while the RTX has a lower score of 256. It’s hard to directly compare console architecture to computing hardware, but we can see a theoretical lead for the GPU against the aging black box.

In terms of graphics, it is not a great surprise that the newer GPU (RTX 4070 Ti Super) has a substantially higher amount of shading units (7680) than the Xbox X which only claims 3328. Additionally, the RTX 4070 Ti Super boasts 208.8 GPixels/s and 626.4 GTexels/s while the Xbox only has 116.8 GPixels/s and 379.6 GTexels/s. What does this mean? It basically adds up to how many pixels and textured pixels a graphics card can fill the screen with per second, amounting to the speed at which your GPU can reach full resolution (e.g. 1080p). Put plainly, the more pixels the better the quality of the image. Which means the RTX 4070 Ti Super produces better graphics in a shorter time. Additionally, the RTX has more Cores (8448) than the Xbox (3328) which means it can complete tasks at a faster speed. 

Should I buy RTX 4070 Ti Super or Xbox Series X?

This depends on what you want the GPU for, how much you are prepared to spend and what effort you want to put in. The Xbox Series X works out considerably cheaper whether you’re buying the standalone GPU or building an entire machine. What’s more, because it’s been available since November 2020, you can often find it discounted from its $499 MSRP, but nearly four years on, the console is starting to show signs of aging. If you’re only interested in booting up a game and playing with minimal fuss then this is the option you should buy. It’s powerful enough to output in 4K to some of the best gaming TVs, too.

However, if you want longevity or a GPU that can cope with high demands for the future then the far newer RTX 4070 Ti Super will be a better pick. It will run better graphics and have a longer ‘shelf life’. However, this will require you to have a pre-built PC or be prepared to build one yourself. So the RTX 4070 Ti Super will work out better value for money in the long run, but may end up being substantially more expensive and twice as much work if you don’t already have a console built.
