If you’re wondering how to update Nintendo Switch software, we’ll cover how you can check the current software on your Switch and update it to the latest version.
There recently hasn’t been an awful lot going on with the Switch’s software. The main updates we’ve seen in the 16.0.0 version have been stability improvements which are still important though less dramatic than past updates. At the time of writing, Nintendo has now rolled out update 16.0.3 which includes “general system stability improvements.”
Even if these updates don’t sound too exciting, it’s good practice to keep your software up-to-date to minimise bugs and glitches while playing.

How to update Nintendo Switch system software?
Before starting, make sure your Switch has a robust internet connection as you’ll need this to complete the update.
To check whether you’ve got the latest system update, select System Settings which you’ll find on your Switch’s home screen. Then scroll down to System on the left sidebar, where you’ll be able to click System Update.
It will also tell you what system update you’re currently on. For reference, we’re on 16.0.3 at the time of writing, so anything older than that will need an update.
If you’re already on the latest version, you’ll get the message Your system is up to date. If not, you’ll get a prompt to restart your system once the update is ready to install.
How to update Nintendo Switch games?
The best way to make sure your Switch games stay up to date is by ensuring you’ve got Auto-Update Software switched on.
You can do this via the System tab of the System settings panel, meaning your games should update to the latest version, even when your Switch is in sleep mode.
However, this function will only work for your most recently played games. So, if you’re planning on diving back into a game you haven’t touched for a while, you’ll need to check for these updates manually.
Simply click on any game on your Switch and press the Plus button on your controller. Then, choose Software Update from the left menu, then select Via the Internet. This then scan for updates. If all is well, you’ll get the message You are using the latest version of this software.
If not, a download will start, so make sure you’ve got a robust internet connection before starting.
