Things to consider
There’s a load of jargon that surrounds gaming monitors. While keywords such as IPS, nits, and G-Sync can be really useful for understanding the performance of a screen, you have to understand what they mean first. We’ve broken down a few key things to consider here.
G-Sync and FreeSync
G-Sync and FreeSync are both different technologies that achieve the same thing. They allow for greater communication between a GPU and the monitor it is attached to, allowing the screen to actually sync its refresh rate to the card. This means that the monitor can stay lined up with the fluctuating frame rates a card generates. As a result screen tearing, which is when the monitor shows sections of multiple frames at once, is eliminated.
When you consider G-Sync vs FreeSync, it comes down to two things – compatibility and price. G-Sync is only compatible with Nvidia GPUs and also adds a premium to the cost of a monitor. FreeSync meanwhile is free for manufacturers to add and is primarily made for AMD cards, though it does now work with many Nvidia cards too.
