We’re considering the RTX 4060’s offering of VRAM, and are considering whether it’s enough for gaming.

Many potential buyers are scrutinising the RTX 4060 specs, especially the 8GB of GDDR6 VRAM. Surprisingly, we found that the RTX 2070 Super shares the same amount of 8GB of GDDR6 VRAM in our comparison of the two graphics cards, raising questions around whether the 4060’s VRAM is really enough for gaming.

VRAM is particularly important for running demanding modern titles like Hogwarts Legacy and Forspoken. Not having enough VRAM results in frustratingly low frame rates, longer load times and an all-round lower graphics quality. Most AAA games have a VRAM requirement of between 6GB – 8GB. So, is the RTX 4060’s 8GB of VRAM enough for gaming?

Is RTX 4060 VRAM enough for gaming in 2023?

The question of whether 8GB is enough for gaming in 2023 is a hotly debated question in gaming communities. The reality is that AAA games only getting more graphically demanding. Releases like Starfield even require players to buy an SSD for the game, which isn’t even that unusual in 2023.

The answer partly depends on what settings you’re happy to play at. 8GB of VRAM is unlikely to deliver the frame rates to enjoy a game like Resident Evil 4 Remake at max settings. If you’re happy playing at lower game settings, then you may be fine with the 4060 VRAM.

It’s worth adding that the RTX 4060 8GB VRAM isn’t a wholly straightforward issue. Nvidia has actually made the VRAM more efficient by adding more L2 cache compared to previous generations like the 3060. In layman’s terms, it means more data can be stored in the speedier L2 cache, without the need to use the memory bus to access the VRAM. This translates to better performance, increased power efficiency and improved ray tracing.

How much VRAM is in RTX 3060?

The RTX 3060 has a 12GB of GDDR6 VRAM which is arguably a much more desirable amount than the 4060’s 8GB of GDDR6 VRAM. That being said, the 4060 does have a wider memory bus of 272GB/s compared to the 3060’s 192-bit, which makes the comparison slightly less straightforward.
