With the Lightfall expansion on the verge of being fully accessible, you’d be right in wondering if Destiny 2 can run on Mac.
The game has been released for six years now and while it became free-to-play in 2019, you’d be right in wondering if it’s made it onto Apple devices yet. We don’t want to excite you, so we’ll dispel any confusion right away. Destiny 2 doesn’t run on Mac, at least, it doesn’t yet.
We’ve had a look at whether games such as Sons of the Forest and Hogwarts Legacy run on Mac, however the answer has been equally as upsetting for Mac fans as it has been for us. Apple devices aren’t historically known for running games. Their design is sleek, unobtrusive, and compact, and while those are great features for notebooks and workstations, they’re not attributes that lend themselves to gaming hardware.
Aside from that, the other biggest issue aside from the hardware is the software. Games are generally written in programming languages such as C and C++, and while you can port applications to OS/X, porting game engines themselves to another OS can be a bit a pickle. You see, Mac OS/X is based on the Unix kernel, a derivation of Linux. Windows, based on the NT Kernel, is an entirely different architecture to OS/X, so the incompatibility between software is the issue here.
That doesn’t mean that a port isn’t possible though.
Could we see Destiny 2 on Macbook at some point?
Honestly, it’s highly unlikely we ever will. If, for some reason, Bungie did decide to invest in a Windows to Mac port of the game, they’d have to find out a way to optimise the game to run on vastly inferior hardware.
The minimum system requirements for Destiny 2 need a GTX 1050, though the recommended GPU is a GTX 1060. Integrated graphics is yet to be able to compete with actual graphics cards, so it’s unlikely that Mac hardware could ever run a game as visually immersive as this.
However, there’s not much stopping Apple from one day implementing competitive graphics solutions in their devices, and then we could see Destiny 2 finally reach our Macbooks.
