The head of Sony’s worldwide studios has said that he, along with everybody else at the company, was “caught by surprise” at the positive reaction to last month’s PS4 horror exclusive Until Dawn.

Discussing the game’s reception with Eurogamer, Shuhei Yoshida described the game as a “sleeper hit”, before explaining that the firm would continue to support the title “through Christmas with some creative ideas”.

“I’m very happy with how the game was received,” he said. “People have asked me why it wasn’t marketed as much as other titles. It’s a decision made by marketing departments in each region. Because of the focus on this Christmas time-frame, to really support the big third-party titles like Destiny and these titles, they didn’t see the need to push Until Dawn that much from the platform marketing standpoint. I think everybody was caught by surprise by the positive reaction. That’s a really great thing for the future of the interactive drama genre.”

Until Dawn puts players in control of eight friends, forcing them to make decisions that affects each character’s fate and the overall story arc. The game was first announced as a PlayStation Move title built for PS3, before switching to PS4 years later.

“We’re a big fan of this genre,” Yoshida continued. “These games can talk to a broader audience. You don’t have to be good at playing games. You can even just watch your friend play the game. We believe this interactive drama genre can help expand the audience for console games.”

Until Dawn debuted at No.2 in the UK All-Formats Charts following its release last month, although official sales figures have yet to be revealed.

Tom described the game as a “gory treat that hits plenty of high notes” in his 8/10 review, highly recommending it to horror fans.
