The story follows the classic story of Yuusuke Urameshi, a 14-year-old delinquent. On one fateful day, Yuusuke miraculously saves the life of a young boy run over by a car. Unfortunately for Yuusuke, he sacrifices his life to do so.
Due to this uncharacteristic sacrifice, the authorities of the spirit realm have decided Yuusuke’s death was premature and thus unexpected. Yuusuke is given the opportunity to be revived thanks to his selfless act, but only after completing a trial. However, with the help of the death god Botan, Yuusuke, as the Spirit Detective, must battle demons on Earth.
