XDefiant will not be shutting down after season 4, the game’s Executive Producer has confirmed. Mark Rubin responded to rumors that the shooter was going to be canned in the near future. He reassured fans the team remains ‘super focused’ on XDefiant and that more content will be coming in the near future.

In the post on X, Rubin wrote: “To be crystal clear there are NO plans to shut down after season 4. I’ve literally been in meetings as of last week to discuss our Year 2 plans. But, right now we are super focused on improving the technical experience (which includes netcode) and adding more content for Seasons.”

Rubin admitted that numbers ‘are down’ but that this is not a cause for concern. “We have done very little marketing so yes our numbers are down but that is just to give the team the time to get the game in a better place before we do bigger spends on marketing to bring new players to the game and to bring back players that have left,” the post continued.

The response follows leaks from Shaun Weber that claimed support of XDefiant will cease once Season 4 has come to an end. Weber also stated Ubisoft is actively asking its playtesters to host another test session in a bid to gather new feedback on areas that can be improved. This isn’t the first time questions surrounding the success of XDefiant have cropped up. A report from Insider Gaming alleged developers have “until the end of Season 3” to increase its player count or risk losing its post-launch support.

Former Call of Duty dev Rubin previously stated XDefiant would be a game you could “love for a long time,” so it’s encouraging to hear the rumors about it ending are not true. The team published an impressive roadmmap for its first year, which suggests there is plenty of support in the pipeline. If Ubisoft is able to continue improving XDefiant, then the team have a real chance of recovering lost players – especially as the tail-end of 2024 doesn’t seem as stacked with AAA releases as last year.
