Xbox LIVE's outage over the weekend was due to a "networking misconfiguration during routine maintenance", and "in no way related to false claims of hacking the service", a Microsoft representative has told

The Xbox LIVE service was unavailable for multiple hours on Saturday night amongst allegations that hacking group Anonymous had attacked the service.

Microsoft acknowledged the issue at the time of the service's outage, telling Xbox LIVE members that it was "hard at work fixing the issue members are having signing in to Xbox LIVE" before thanking them for their patience.

The downtime follows months of speculation that Microsoft is planning to introduce an 'always-online' requirement with its next Xbox console.

The console is expected to be announced late next month.
