Xbox One’s 2017 line-up will not feature a new Halo FPS or Gears of War title, with the focus being on new experiences, Xbox boss Phil Spencer has said on Twitter.

“XB1 games shipping this year are different for us,” wrote Spencer, “not Halo FPS/Gears led, new experiences with different IP, will be fun year.”

When Microsoft confirmed the cancellation of Scalebound earlier this month it also stated that 2017’s line-up would include Halo Wars 2, Crackdown 3, State of Decay 2 and Sea of Thieves.

Whilst all those titles could prove great additions to the Xbox library, none really scream blockbuster like a Halo FPS or Gears of War. No doubt Halo and Gears will feature in the Scorpio line-up this holiday season, likely running with jazzed-up visuals, but what else does Microsoft have in store as it battles to win back market share currently dominated by PS4?

Perhaps a new Forza title from Turn10 is coming, and besides that Microsoft may be relying on third-parties to fill the FPS first-party void.
