The new year is always the most exciting time to be a wrestling fan. Royal Rumble is only one week away and it kickstarts the official road to wrestling’s Superbowl equivalent, WrestleMania. Not only that, but the Royal Rumble also now annually signifies the road to the release of 2K’s newest WWE video game. It will launch around WrestleMania time again, and a 2K tweet has teased the return of a much-beloved match type in WWE 2K24 after a nearly ten-year absence.

There are many things to anticipate about the newest installment from 2K. It seems likely CM Punk will be in the game presumably as DLC, and the roster list will be bigger than ever as is tradition. There will also be a new showcase mode and wrestling fans online are hoping it is dedicated to 40 years of WrestleMania rather than a single superstar ala Rey Mysterio and John Cena.

Details about the game are very light as of writing, but that’s all set to change following next week’s Monday Night RAW. The curtain is set to be pulled aside and we may see the return of a fan-favorite match type in WWE 2K24.

WWE 2K24 special guest referee tease

2K has teased the return of the special guest referee match type in WWE 2K24. On the official WWEGames Twitter account, the developer has posted a photo of a sleeveless referee shirt draped in the iconic black-and-white stripes. The only other added details are the WWE and WWE2K24 logos.

Special guest referee hasn’t been seen since 2K15 for PS3 and Xbox 360. It was removed with the PS4 and Xbox One version of 2K15, and it hasn’t made a return ever since. So, after a nearly ten-year absence, it’s fantastic news to hear that it’s likely returning. Assuming it does return as teased, here’s hoping it’s not limited and can be used in numerous multi-man matches as well as online.

Aside from the tease of special guest referee, 2K is also hyping the mystery of the cover star. A leak has possibly already revealed the WWE 2K24 cover star athlete, and it is arguably the biggest name in the business right now just underneath Roman Reigns.

Details about the game will be officially revealed on January 22nd during Monday Night RAW. Judging by tradition, the reveal will most likely be a live-action teaser dedicated to the cover star with very brief snippets of gameplay. We should also get the release date.
