World of Warcraft: Cataclysm goes live today in mainland China after fierce regulations prevented its release earlier in the year.
The game was initially approved by China’s Ministry of Culture and General Administration of Press and Publication last June. However, Activision-Blizzard was forced to wait to release its expansion pack for WoW due to strict standards set out by the Ministry which has enforced changes to the game.
Previous changes to the game have included the skeletal race The Forsaken, being altered. Additionally, player corpses have been changed from dead bodies into gravestones.
The game was originally shut down in 2009 when it failed to meet the standards set by China’s agency. Similarly, World of Warcraft’s second expansion pack, The Wrath of the Lich King, was rejected twice by the Chinese government and released 23 months after its launch in the West.
Cataclysm on the other hand has only a seven month difference in release dates.
