The Wii U may be under performing based on Nintendo’s targets, but Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto does not believe this presents any long-term concerns.
Speaking recently to the New York Times, Miyamoto commented on the slow start for the Wii U.
“I think that the Wii U still has a long future,” he said. “We really view it as being the ideal device that families are going to want to have connected to that screen in the living room that everyone is going to gather around and watch.
“Certainly in the short term I would want to see it performing with probably a little more momentum. I think in the long term I’m not at a point where I’m concerned yet.”
The problem Nintendo faces is convincing consumers to pay a not insignificant amount of money for the system which currently offers fewer experiences than the Xbox 360 and PS3, and will soon be outclassed by the PS4 and next Xbox. A price cut some point in 2013 seems a must, but by the time this comes it may be too late for the Wii U.
