The Wii U continues to struggle despite seeing hardware sales almost double in the three month period ended September 2013, Nintendo has announced.
300,000 Wii U consoles were sold worldwide between July and September, up from 160,000 units in the April-June quarter. However, this means only 460,000 units were sold worldwide over a six month period.
This is despite a Wii U software slate which included Pikmin 3 and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD.
The Wii U has sold 3.91 million units worldwide since its launch in November 2012, with Nintendo forecasting sales of nine million units during the year ending March 31, 2014. That means 8.5 million Wii U consoles will need to be sold between October 2013 and March 2014, which could be a tough ask.
Nintendo noted that the Wii U “still has a negative impact on Nintendo’s profits, owning mainly to its markdown in the United States and Europe”.
Nintendo reported net sales of 196.5 billion yen, but a loss of 23.2 billion yen.
The firm added: “For Wii U, we attempt to concentrate on pro-actively releasing key first-party titles towards the coming year in order to regain momentum for the platform. For the coming year-end sales season, we will release key first-party titles such as Wii Party U and Super Mario 3D World, and offer the Wii U hardware at an affordable price by bundling software with the system. We will also try new promotional activities such as a campaign where users can experience Wii Fit U free of charge.”
