The Wii Mini will be released in Canada on December 7, where the console will be available exclusively this holiday season, Nintendo has announced.

Wii Mini is smaller than the original Wii system, and comes in matte black with a red border. The system comes with a red Wii Remote Plus, a red Nunchuk controller and works with most Wii accessories. No game will be included with the Wii Mini.

“There are games in the Wii library for every type of player,” said Ron Bertram, Nintendo of Canada’s vice president and general manager. “Wii Mini is a great gift for the holidays that brings everyone in the family together to play. Wii Mini has a mini price, but it’s all about big fun.”

The Wii Mini has also been designed exclusively to play Wii games. There’s no internet capabilities – meaning no WiiWare or Virtual Console – and doesn’t play GameCube games. Nintendo says over 1,400 Wii games are available.

While the Mini will be “available exclusively in Canada during the holiday season” it seems certain the smaller unit will be launched worldwide in 2013.

At this late stage in the Wii’s life, cutting the cost of the console will help tap into untouched markets – $99.99 Canadian dollars equates to around £60.
