Watch Dogs will run at 900p on PlayStation 4 and 792p on Xbox One, Ubisoft has confirmed. Both versions will run at 30 frames per second.

The PS4 version’s performance comes in slightly lower than many had expected, with prior comments from Sony and Ubisoft suggesting that the game would run at full HD 1080p. Sony even went so far as to say that the game would run at 1080p/60fps on PS4, although its comments were later deleted.

“Resolution is a number, just like framerate is a number,” creative director Jonathan Morin explained on Ubi Blog. “All those numbers are valid aspects of making games. “But you make choices about the experience you want to deliver. In our case, dynamism is everything.

“Exploration and expression are everything. You want to have a steady framerate, but you want to have dynamism at the core of the experience. The same goes with resolution. People tend to look at corridor shooters, for example, where there’s a corridor and all the effects are on and it’s unbelievable, and they forget that if you apply those same global effects to an open city with people around and potential car crashes and guys in multiplayer showing up without warning, the same effect is applied to a lot of dynamic elements that are happening in every frame. So it becomes magnified in cost.”

The performance difference between the two versions will come as another blow for Microsoft, which has already seen multiplatform titles Call of Duty: Ghosts, Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, Thief, Battlefield 4 and Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes perform worse on Xbox One than PS4.

Ubisoft released a new 9 minute trailer for Watch Dogs earlier this evening detailing everything players need to know about this month’s hacktion game. Check it out by heading through here.

Watch Dogs launches on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC on May 27, with a Wii U version following in autumn.
