Watch Dogs has become “the highest pre-ordered next-generation console game to date,” according to GameStop, with pre-order numbers above earlier hits Call of Duty: Ghosts and Battlefield 4.
“We are seeing tremendous excitement for the new Watch Dogs game,” said Michael van den Berg, vice president of merchandising at GameStop International. “In fact, Watch Dogs is the highest pre-ordered next-generation console game to date. It is on track to be one of the top selling video games across all consoles in 2014.”
Ubisoft added that Watch Dogs is the most pre-ordered new IP in its history and “the most pre-ordered new IP in the entire industry this year”. The publisher expects the game to sell over 6.3 million copies, outselling the original Assassin’s Creed.
“These strong pre-orders are a clear indication of players’ anticipation and excitement for Watch Dogs,” said Geoffroy Sardin, Senior VP of Sales and Marketing at Ubisoft. “The teams have worked tirelessly to ensure that players will enjoy a top quality game with enormous scope, and we can’t wait to get the game into their hands.”
Ubisoft announced that the game had gone gold yesterday following five and a half yeasr in development.
Watch Dogs launches on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PC on May 27. A Wii U version is due to launch later this year.
