Ubisoft has declared it was the victim of a ‘cyber security incident’ in an update to players of its games.
A statement on the Ubisoft website, spotted by GamesIndustry.biz, revealed and detailed the news. “Last week, Ubisoft experienced a cyber security incident that caused temporary disruption to some of our games, systems, and services. Our IT teams are working with leading external experts to investigate the issue”, it said.
“As a precautionary measure we initiated a company-wide password reset. Also, we can confirm that all our games and services are functioning normally and that at this time there is no evidence any player personal information was accessed or exposed as a by-product of this incident.”
The company didn’t disclose any further details on the incident. However, a number of other technology related companies have suffered similar breaches in the last few weeks. PC hardware manufacturer Nvidia was the victim of a Ransomware attack at the end of February as reported by The Telegraph (via Video Games Chronicle.) The attack reportedly took parts of its business down for two days.
In an update earlier this week, NVIDIA declared that two code signing certificates stolen in the leak had expired. It advised users caution that hackers may use these certificates to run malicious code, and advised users to only download NVIDIA software from trusted sources.
There’s no indication to say that this Ubisoft cyber security incident is any way related to the NVIDIA hack. For now though, you still might want to change any passwords on your Ubisoft accounts, just to be safe.
