United Front Games has formally revealed Triad Wars, an asynchronous multiplayer, open-world PC action adventure game set in the Sleeping Dogs universe.

Due for release on PC in early 2015, Triad Wars is described by the developer as being the “flip-side of Sleeping Dogs”, and sees players rise to power as a criminal kingpin in Hong Kong, building up their empire and raiding other players’ turf.

The game appears to feature similar combat and driving mechanics to the original Sleeping Dogs, with UFG stating that the game will “change and evolve over time as people play it”.

“Whether you choose to excel in extortion, hacking, money laundering, stolen cars, or even just good ol’ fashioned violence is strictly situational and will be representational of your playstyle,” says UFG. “It’s your city to claim, and how you do it is entirely up to you.”

The game will be free-to-play, Square Enix confirmed to VideoGamer.com this morning.

The reveal doesn’t appear to have gone down well with some fans, however, who had been expecting a direct sequel to Sleeping Dogs.

“Sleeping Dogs was one of my favorite games of last gen and I’m sure that majority of the fans including my self wanted a sequel,” said one fan on YouTube. “I’m not sure why you thought making this Triad Wars game over an actual sequel was better. Makes no sense…”
