Sony has said that the online services of Gran Turismo 5 are “experiencing some extreme online traffic congestion,” leading to extended delays in both the multiplayer and single-player modes.
“Because GT5 performs online access not only when participating in online races and using community features, but also when starting the game and during the various screen displays in GT Mode, unfortunately this online congestion is also affecting standard gameplay,” explained Sony in a statement on the game’s official website.
If you are experiencing the following symptoms, we recommend that you temporarily play GT5 without connecting the PlayStation 3 (PS3) to the network.
Sony has taken measures to ease the situation, notably disabling some community features, but players are also being advised to disable their internet connection if they don’t plan on playing online.
The statement concluded: “Currently we are simultaneously working on several different solutions to improve the network status and alleviate the network congestion as soon as possible. We are expecting to be able to provide a proper online service again soon.
“We sincerely apologise to our customers for the inconvenience.”
Gran Turismo 5 is out now for PS3. Look out for our review later today.
It’s pretty common for big games to suffer from server congestion at launch, when huge numbers of gamers are all trying to access the network. The problem here is that the server problems are causing severe delays across the entire game; loading times weren’t exactly rapid in the first place.
We’re sure Sony will fix the problems, or network traffic will drop down to a manageable level, but problems like this do leave a black mark on the launch.
