Sony’s PlayStation 5 is a magnificent console. Not only does it support superfast loading and haptic feedback through the DualSense controller, but what puts it over the edge against the Xbox Series X/S is the bevy of amazing console exclusives such as Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The PlayStation 5 has been doing exceedingly well, and now the total lifetime PS5 sales are just one week behind PS4. This is fantastic news and don’t expect things to slow down as sales have massively spiked this year.

If you happen to be a PlayStation loyalist, then make sure to take advantage of the ongoing PSN store Christmas sale 2023. This has slashed the price for nearly 500 games on PS4 and PS5, so it’s the perfect opportunity to bag some games you needed to skip because of financial restraints. In addition, if you are yet to make the leap from PS4 to current-gen, then make sure to enter Sony’s competition to win a PS5. The odds of winning the competition are short, but all you need to do to be in with a shot is sign up and answer five questions.

It has been a good year for gamers and it’s also been a great year for Sony in regard to PS5 sales. The total lifetime sales right now aren’t close to the full PS4, but it is tracking just one week behind Sony’s last-gen console.

Total lifetime PS5 sales are just one week behind PS4

Per gamesindustry, the PS5 has reached 50 million total lifetime sales worldwide as of December 9th, 2023. This means it is tracking just one week behind the PS4 which is a significant improvement from July when the console hit 40 million sales and was two months behind. In addition, there was a 376% sales hike for PS5 consoles in November throughout Europe compared to 2022.

As for the increase in sales, gamesindustry notes that the console’s launch was spoiled by stock issues. A constant worldwide shortage of components resulted in the console being consistently out-of-stock, and these significant issues were originally a result of the global pandemic when the PS5 originally came out in November 2020. These stock issues were only resolved in the United States in November 2022, and this caused a significant spike in sales.

Speaking about the current lifetime sales, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan said “Achieving this PS5 sales milestone is a testament to the unwavering support of the global PlayStation community and their passion for the incredible experiences created by the talented developers from PlayStation Studios and our partners”. He added, “We’re grateful for all of our players who have joined the PS5 journey so far, and we’re thrilled that this is the first holiday season since launch that we have a full supply of PS5 consoles – so anyone who wants to get one can get one”.

As of September 2023, the total lifetime sales for the PS4 are more than 117 worldwide according to Statista. The console came out in November 2013, so it has been available for ten years now. The PS5 came out in November 2020, so it is only three years old as of writing. It will be interesting to see if it ever surpasses the PS4.

GTA 6 is coming out in 2025 on consoles only so that will surely result in millions of sales, plus there are lots more amazing PS5 exclusives yet to come out such as the leaked Insomniac future projects. In addition to all of the above, there is also the PS5 Pro rumored for September 2024, and then there are rumors suggesting the PS6 may arrive in 2028/29.
