Too Human and X-Men: Destiny developer Silicon Knights has laid off nearly half its workforce following a split from an unnamed publisher for an unannounced game, reports Kotaku.

Earlier reports suggested 72 staff had been let go, leaving only 25 still in employment, but Silicon Knights says only 43 have been laid off.

“Last week Silicon Knights experienced layoffs due to extended contract negotiations falling through with a potential partner,” the developer told Kotaku. “We are currently in discussions with other potential partners. The recent Ontario government funding is tied to future performance targets, spread out over the next 5 years, which we will meet.”

The publisher partner wasn’t named, but the studio said it wasn’t Activision.

Going forward, Silicon Knights says it will be returning to what has been successful in the past.

“The company is currently refocusing and returning to its roots, working on one of its most requested titles for the next generation,” the Silicon Knights spokesperson said.

The studio’s most praised title is 2002’s GameCube chiller Eternal Darkness, but also had success with Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain. However, the latter is an IP in the hands of Eidos/Square Enix. It’s also possible Too Human – originally planned as a trilogy – will make a return.
