Tomb Raider is one of the greatest video game franchises of all time. A lot of its popularity is down to Lara Croft who is one of the most recognizable and beloved characters in entertainment history. Fans have already been treated to a lot this month, but there is more to come as October 25th marks a massive landmark for the Tomb Raider series.

October has already been very kind to fans of Lara Croft. We were treated to the Netflix anime series at the beginning of the month, and then Crystal Dynamics and Aspyr revealed that Tomb Raider Remastered 4-6 is coming out in February next year. This package will contain The Last Revelation, Chronicles, and the much beloved, Angel of Darkness.

While the reveal of a remaster for Angel of Darkness was incredible, it’s possible more good news could be on the way in celebration of the series’ 28th anniversary.

Tomb Raider is celebrating its 28th anniversary

Per Crystal Dynamics, “Tomb Raider officially commemorates its 28th anniversary on October 25”. This announcement was made in-conjunction with the reveal that the franchise has sold 100 million copies across its lifespan.

For those not in the know, the first Tomb Raider came out on October 25th back in 1996. England’s leading lady made her debut on the PS1, and she quickly became an icon that transcended the world of video games.

Since 1996, there has been a Tomb Raider released for every PlayStation generation aside from the PS5:

  • TR1 – 1996 (PS1)
  • TR2 – 1997 (PS1)
  • TR3 – 1998 (PS1)
  • TR4 – 1999 (PS1)
  • TR5 – 2000 (PS1)
  • TR Angel of Darkness – 2003 (PS2)
  • TR Legend – 2006 (PS2)
  • TR Anniversary – 2007 (PS2)
  • TR Underworld – 2008 (PS3)
  • TR 2013 (PS3)
  • Rise of the Tomb Raider – 2015 (PS4)
  • Shadow of the Tomb Raider – 2018 (PS4)

While there is no PS5 release yet, the good news is that one is in-development at Crystal Dynamics. Even though 12 games have already come out, the next Tomb Raider is recognized as TR12 rather than TR13 because Anniversary was a remake of Lara Croft’s debut.

As for what we know about TR12, it is a unification of all the timelines with the Survivor trilogy regarded as canon for Lara Croft’s origin. The Netflix anime series is also a part of the unified timeline as it sits between Shadow and TR 1996. Crystal Dynamics’ new entry will be published by Amazon Games, and it is in-development with Unreal Engine 5.

Nothing is officially announced for October 25th, but it’s possible we could receive some news about TR12 to help celebrate the series’ 28th anniversary. Fans shouldn’t expect anything huge, but just a social media post or tease would be welcomed as fans haven’t been treated to any news since Crystal Dynamics revealed the appearance and design of unified Lara back in February.

While we are awaiting more official details, a Metacritic page for TR12 has just recently appeared online, and alleged leaks from earlier in the year claim the upcoming installment is set in an open-world India where players can freely ride Lara’s motorcycle.

Make sure to follow the official Tomb Raider accounts on X and Instagram to see if anything pops up in light of the series’ 28th anniversary celebrations.
